Romans defense advice

I'm looking for advice on how to best play a Roman defense in T1... I like some of the characters but overall a straight-Roman defense seems to give up initiative too much and has just a few interrupts/negates available.

The centurions from PC are pretty dope with their negates, but i'll agree, there aren't too many negates to use.  For negates, begging for grain is great with the large emperors, gam's speech is also pretty nice. unsuccessful is also pretty good, basically another gam's speech, and there is also the "crucify him!" from the starter deck. i think that should be enough.  as for initiative, naaman's chariots are the best option i've found. The roman jailer will also be one of your best assets for initiative. Some interrupts include Expelling the jews... and i guess that's it... I'd say have coliseum and just go for negates off of your huge emperors.

Jesse, I have a deck that runs a Romans defense and it has worked very well for me in several games.  I'll post a list on here ASAP of what I use.

You can't build a Romans defense in a vacuum. How much you dedicate to speed, longevity, burst, disruption and destruction depends on what your offense is doing.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Sorry for the double-post but I'll share the defense I tried:

Evil Characters
Emperor Caius Caligula
Emperor Tiberius
Emperor Vitellius
Emperor Claudius
Emperor Nero
Emperor Otho
The Terrifying Beast
Centurion at Jerusalem
The Roman Jailer

Evil Enhancements
Crucify Him!
Begging for Grain
Unsuccessful
Namaan's Chariots and Horses
Expelling the Jews
Paying Taxes
Heavy Taxes
Uproar in Jerusalem
Arrest in Jerusalem

Support Cards
Gamaliel's Speech
Fortress of Antonia
Roman Prison
Coliseum

I like the diversity of abilities but what I don't like is how they give up initiative so much. Is the hand-control strategy actually the best way to go for a Roman defense?

I initially had the same problem with intiative until I added in Rome and Emp Galba so that I could pull Rome out and play it. Then you can play any colored NT enhancements (except orange) on your emperors, which will give you a lot more interrupt/negate EE options. I also run Claudius Lysias in, addition to CaJ, for soul gen.

That's what i've found to work best for me :dunno: of course, that was last year before cloud of witnesses.

@ Watchman492 The only reason i don't like the Rome strategy is because if you don't have it out, then you are stuck with a bunch of multi colored enhancements that you can't use. plus, with the prevalence of coliseum, people have so many more ways to get rid of fortresses now. although, the first strike on rome is nice if you are running lots of negates.

That's why I only run one or two other non-gray EE interrupts.  Rome is not only good for that but it's also good for first strike, as you said.  Naaman's Chariots and Horses is imperative to have in this defense since Roman emperors give up initiative.  NCaH is best used when it stays on the EC as a weapon-class enhancement for continual use when defending.

Jesse, this is my Roman defense:

Evil Characters
Emp. Claudius (TPC)
Emp. Tiberius
Emp. Otho
Emp. Caius Caligula
Emp. Galba
Centurion at Jerusalem
Claudius Lysias
The Terrifying Beast
Coliseum Lion

Evil Enhance.
Coliseum Lions
Every Man's Sword (CoW)
Romans Destroy Jerusalem
Paying Taxes
Revolt (TPC, gold brigade)
Namaan's Chariots and Horses
Balaam's Disobedience
Gamaliel's Speech
Scattered
Expelling the Jews
Crucify Him!

Support
Unholy Writ (works well with CaJ)
Denarius
Rome
Caesarea Philippi (for protection of the Romans and also site self-protection)

I had Roman Spear (my offense is red warriors) but it just didn't seem to work well for what I wanted.  Emperor Tiberius is a must have as he can under deck any dominant (so long as he's not being prevented/negated).  I had Drusilla and she worked well a few times, but I opted to put another emperor in her place.  She's a good chump block though.  Still testing out Coliseum Lion and may change it with a different character.  But it's good for discarding an opponent's enhancement, and if you do, you get initiative to play an EE.  And this is CBN if Coliseum is in play.

Hope this helps ya brother.

I have to ask, (as I am also making a Roman defense for Angels) why aren't you playing Wrath of Satan?

They seem pretty lame as fighters maybe we should challenge them to a dance off or a redemption game

Wrath of Satan is usually best used when you're playing an offense that has some kind of protection or easy recursion. Joseph (CoW) with a Jacob's Sons offense or Angels with Chamber are both good examples, but using a Red OT WC offense, you don't really have a way to protect or recur that easily.

I see. So like for me, it's a good card to run, but many others it probably isn't.

My guess is that a lot of Roman defenses will want to use Emperor Domitian.
