Assyrians and Philistines both have forts that protect from capture. The Philistine one lets you activate Altar of Dagon, which will protect from convert even in battle, which is very nice for those initiative-giving giants. Blue Tassles works nicely, too. I think Gates of Jerusalem protects from capture. Does House of Rimmon (Syrians)?

Sure, she may clear out a defense, but unless you're playing Pale Green she Holy Grail on the other hand is extremely useful.
Assyrian Camp protects from discard capture and convert! Assyrians are good too!
i find it ironic that everyone is listing the territory-defenders that were available prior to texp as viable counters to tgt...yet that still didn't stop tgt from sweeping nationals. HMM.
what cards shuffle EC's in territories? Im not doubting there are some but I am just not familiar with them.

Yeah, I used a new beginning twice against Assyrian defenses. It worked great, got rid of horses and then I'd get initiative and win the battle.
