Top Cut

Top Cut is a Redemption deck-building contest modeled after the TV show Chopped.

Contestants will be given a basket of ingredients, cards which they will use to make the ultimate deck!

All contestants will have access to the same pantry of additional cards, which will be stocked for each competition.  The exact contents of the pantry will vary, usually based on the ingredients, but most cards will be available in some quantity, even if it is limited.  Contestants will be told whether the pantry will be replenished, or vary, between phases.

Each competition will take place over 3 weeks, with each phase taking a week.  The basket for each phase will be given by Tuesday at midnight of each week, through a post, and the deck will be due by Sunday night at midnight to be judged.

Judging of the decks will be done on three different, but equally important, components:

1.   Taste – The overall power of the deck, and how useful it is in actual play.
2.   Presentation – Efficient design and cohesiveness of all parts of the deck.
3.   Creativity – How well the ingredients for that phase are incorporated, how central they are made, and how effectively they are used.

When the decks are turned in, the contestants also give an explanation of their deck, and sell the concept to the judging panel.  This is their opportunity to show how they highlighted the ingredients, how ridiculously powerful their deck is, how their foes have no hope, how handsome and smart a judge is, etc.  Creativity and humor can sway certain judges (potentially…probably not…try anyway).

Each judge will provide feedback on all of the decks, and will rate them as above.*

When the announcements of the second and third baskets are made, the judging panel will also reveal who is part of the Top Cut…and who has just been cut!

The final phase will be between only two contestants, and the final winner will be based on all three decks built (not just the final one).  This is important to remember if it is announced that the pantry is not replenished as the show goes on…

*All opinions, criticism, personal attacks, and terrible attempts at humor from the judges do not represent the panel as a whole, nor Cactus, nor the Redemption community, and should not be taken seriously in any case.  The judges and panel take no responsibility for needing to actually be correct or to rate decks in a way that makes sense to normal people.  You have been warned.

I'll give it a run.

Is there a way to submit decks ananomously to avoid any subconscious bias? (I don't think this is a huge deal but if one person wins 3 or 4 weeks in a row I wouldn't want them "cut" because they keep winning.

To the first part, I was going to have them submitted to me by e-mail more than likely, so that people can give their 'sell' to the judges, the entry is hidden from other competitors until all submissions are in, and those who have the ability could attach a .dek file for ease of use by the judges.  I don't think we'll have a problem keeping anyone around who keeps winning, but that's my take.  Open to suggestions.

On the second part, each week would be a 'round' and we would just cut down until the 'finals' in round 3 (the dessert portion, for those who watch the show...which I haven't, but whatever).  We'd have probably 3 week competitions followed by 1 week downtime to see who else wants to compete, then start again.

Updated first post with everyone we have so far.

I'd like to start this next week, if everyone is on board with that.

Given that we already have 9 people (didn't expect that so quickly), I'd like to propose that we start this week, with your first 'basket' coming out on Tuesday.

If anyone has an issue with that, please let me know and we can hold off a bit!
