Title: Deck Building Competition
Post by: Nameless on March 28, 2014, 05:48:38 PM
With the wave of new fun threads being posted on the boards I thought that I would make my own.

I was thinking that every week(or month) we could have a competition to build a certain type of deck(let's say Disciples/Pharisees. But never anything that boring).  Then after entires were all posted we would have some unbiased person(or people) decide which was the best.

Would people participate in the competition? Or would it be dead after one month.

I would like to know if people would want this to happen.  And if it does, suggestions for decks that could be built.  Also fun things could be done like making a deck that has to include X obscure cards.

Let me know what you think!

I love this idea and would definitely compete. My suggestion for the first week is every deck would have to make a good use for Buckler. ;)

Why not make it like Chopped (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chopped_(TV_series)#Format)?

Establish a 'pantry' that can be used for each phase/contest, limiting it to sets (mostly likely) or some other condition.  Anything in the 'pantry' can be used.

Then, give the 'ingredients' in the basket: specific cards, identifiers, brigades, etc.

Score on the overall 'taste' of the deck (power), 'presentation' (efficient design and play), and 'creativity' (how well they can incorporate the 'ingredients' and how central they are made to the deck).

So you'd need some judges, but that could be fun.

This is a great idea!

As a side note, since I am not as big on building decks, but analyzing and playing instead, I will be a judge if we start something up.

So after one day we have 4 people who would compete, one judges, new ideas, and a deck idea.  This is working out better than I could imagine.

Top Cut

Top Cut is a Redemption deck-building contest modeled after the TV show Chopped.

Contestants will be given a basket of ingredients, cards which will be used to make the ultimate deck!  Sometimes this will be very specific (certain cards must be included); other times it will be more generic (the basket will hold all cards of particular identifiers, brigades, etc.).

All contestants will have access to the same pantry of additional cards, which will be stocked for each show.  The exact contents of the pantry will vary, usually based on the ingredients, but most cards will be available in some quantity (though the supply of certain cards may be limited…and may not replenish across phases…).

Each show will take place over 3 weeks, with each phase taking a week.  The basket for that phase will be given by Tuesday at midnight of each week, and the deck will be due by Sunday night at midnight to be judged.
Judging of the decks will be done on three different, but equally important, components:

1.   Taste – The overall power of the deck, and how useful it is in actual play.
2.   Presentation – Efficient design and cohesiveness of all parts of the deck.
3.   Creativity – How well the ingredients for that phase are incorporated, how central they are made, and how effectively they are used.

When the decks are turned in, the contestants also give an explanation of their deck, and sell the concept to the judging panel.  This is their opportunity to show how they highlighted the ingredients, how ridiculously powerful their deck is, how their foes have no hope, how handsome and smart the judge is, etc.  Creativity and humor can sway certain judges (potentially…probably not…try anyway).

When the announcements of the second and third baskets are made, the judging panel will also reveal who is part of the Top Cut…and who has just been cut!

The final phase will be between only two contestants, and the final winner will be based on all three decks built (not just the final one).  This is important to remember if it is announced that the pantry is not replenished as the show goes on…

LET THE GAMES COMMENCE!

I think this would work well, and that the time limits work well to keep it moving but give everyone a chance to finish decks.  If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know :)

If you would like to be considered as a contestant, please send me a PM even if you post here (I will lose track in-thread :().  If you want to be a judge with me, same thing applies.

Let's have some fun :)
