Mix and Match Deck Project - Decks complete, other feedback?
« on: August 28, 2012, 12:22:23 PM »
+1
In order to teach new players Redemption and allow them to play with a variety of decks more easily without overly complex strategies making the game too confusing at first, I made base offenses and defenses in every brigade - some brigades have more than one base. I made all of the base offenses and defenses exactly the same size - as I have sleeved all of the cards the same I can easily allow players to pick and match an offense with a defense and put the deck together without taking more than a couple minutes to have their deck ready to play.

This "mix and match" system allows players to easily play with a variety of themes and figure out their playstyle before deciding which cards to start buying. The system also allows playgroup leaders to have a variety of pre-constructed decks that they can spot to players to use during tournaments if the players do not have their own cards. For players who already have extensive card collections, the main cost is acquiring a large number of the same type of card sleeve.

Deck Structure

56 Card Decks

Lost Souls: 7 (Wanderer, NT, Female + 4 others players select from a pile* - this selection can be random if you choose)

Dominants: 7
4 Good (Son of God, New Jerusalem, Angel of the Lord + 1 more of player's choice from a pile* or random)
3 Evil (Christian Martyr, + 2 more of player's choice from a pile* or random)

Misc Support: 2 (CoF in every deck, + 1 of player's choice from pile of artifacts/forts* - My current stack contains: Shroud, Darius' Decree, Gifts, Signet Ring, Grail, HoH, HHI, Lampstand, Writ x2, Captured Ark, RBD, Storehouse, The Darkness, WoP x2)

Offense: 21 cards
   9 Heroes
   8 Hero Enhancements
4 Support Cards (from the card types: Artifact/Fortress/Covenant/Access Site)

Defense: 19 cards
   8 Evil Characters
   7 Evil Enhancements
4 Support Cards (from the card types: Artifact/Fortress/Curse/Site)

* Piles of available cards can come from whatever you have available to let players use. I cut back my collection to 3 copies of the best dominants so I am printing proxies for more copies of NJ promo. I will encourage players to buy their own NJ eventually for tournaments.

The offenses and defenses I have created are in further posts on this page.

Thanks,
Kirk

I really like that idea, and I think 9:8/8:7 are good ratios for characters to enhancements. I also think that there should be a standard set of Lost Souls. Currently, these are the ones I would consider standard (should be in every deck):

Wanderer
Revealer*
NT Only
Female Only
+3 More based on offense/defense strategy.

*Revealer should be in every deck if possible, but since you might not have enough, it could be easily replaced.

The biggest issue I see is the defensive site. There are really only two (maybe three) sites that I would expect to see by themselves in a deck: Hormah and Nazareth (and maybe Golgotha). All other useful sites are really best used in conjunction with other sites in site lock/stall-type decks, or even GoS decks. If you have enough Hormah's and Nazareths to handle that, then that's probably okay, but very few defenses benefit from any other site by itself. I think in a lot of cases you might want to add another Curse/Evil Artifact/Evil Fortress instead of the site.

Do you think I should make offense and defense equal sized?

No. The main idea of Redemption is that Good triumphs over Evil. Even the best decks that include a sizable defense still have more offense because you can't win souls without offense. The E/F and G/H decks have bigger offenses than defenses (22-23 vs. 17-18), so your current outline is even a bit more even than those, which is certainly okay.

As for your current suggestions, I assume Joseph is supposed to be in the Blue offense? Also, I'd pick Seven Years of Plenty over Numerous as the Stars. The other ones look great (was wondering why you chose Sam (L) instead of the new one, then remembered Windows...nice).

...I'm not sure ANB is a good "simple" card for a beginning deck...

What about DAEs? Currently for your OT prophets, a very strong hero (Isaiah) is severely diminished in power because of the lack of his huge enhancements, Siegeworks and Razor.
ANB is good. Change my mind.

I only have 4 - so the first 4 players can use Revealer. I think your idea of standardizing Lost Souls is good.

Quote
The biggest issue I see is the defensive site. There are really only two (maybe three) sites that I would expect to see by themselves in a deck: Hormah and Nazareth (and maybe Golgotha). All other useful sites are really best used in conjunction with other sites in site lock/stall-type decks, or even GoS decks. If you have enough Hormah's and Nazareths to handle that, then that's probably okay, but very few defenses benefit from any other site by itself. I think in a lot of cases you might want to add another Curse/Evil Artifact/Evil Fortress instead of the site.

Good point - I am currently working on the defenses and have been realizing sites are not going in each. I have just been adding one of another card for those decks.

Do you think I should make offense and defense equal sized?

Quote

Thanks for the feedback - makes sense.

Quote
As for your current suggestions, I assume Joseph is supposed to be in the Blue offense? Also, I'd pick Seven Years of Plenty over Numerous as the Stars. The other ones look great (was wondering why you chose Sam (L) instead of the new one, then remembered Windows...nice).

Yes - missed Joseph off the Deck Summary from RTS. I like the Seven Years suggestion.

...I'm not sure ANB is a good "simple" card for a beginning deck...

What about DAEs? Currently for your OT prophets, a very strong hero (Isaiah) is severely diminished in power because of the lack of his huge enhancements, Siegeworks and Razor.

Good point - I thought ANB would make a new player find the green deck 'fun.' Do you think ANB for Razor would be a good switch? What would you pull for Siegeworks?

I was trying to determine whether to make it Isaiah reliant, and if that was the case I would add the other Seraph as well. Thoughts?

To be honest I don't think you should use Isaiah at all. Yes, he is the best Prophet offense but an Isaiah offense isn't really a true prophet offense. I think you should stick some of the more old school stuff. Everything else looks pretty good but the only thing I would consider is taking HT out of TGT because it can be a rather complictaed card for new players.

I think setting up something like this will GREATLY depend on who you're typical new player is.  If your playgroup is primarily made up of adults who already have experience with CCGs, then I think this is probably the best way to go.

However, if your planning on teaching the game to children or even teens without experience with CCGs, then these decks are WAY too complicated to expect them to be able to just pick up and play with effectively.  It will just lead to confusion and frustration.

For a simpler system for teaching the game, please go to this post of mine.

Thanks Mark. My audience is mainly young adults (college age and up) at my church. I think your system is great for younger players. I figured the system I am working on will help players be able to play with semi-competitive decks fairly quickly. I would also like to add that others have asked about you posting deck lists to help them implement similar systems. Could you help by doing that on your post?

Clayton,

Good points. Can anyone else weigh in whether Isaiah should be tossed? I think that Herod's Temple can be confusing - I will look to switch that out.

The White TGT offense should have Blessings and First Fruits in it, IMHO.  I'd drop Gentle Resolution and Love at First Sight.

Since you have Lying Spirit and TTB in your Roman D, Twice Afflicted could be a nice addition.  Maybe replace Deluge of Rain?

Very well-put together decks, btw.

Thanks for the feedback,

I like all of your suggestions and have implemented them all. I thought about Twice Afflicted but didn't make room for it initially.

Everyone, are any of the offenses/defenses significantly stronger than another? My thought is that Purple Kings have too many battle winners and I should drop 1 for something else. Which one should I drop and for what?

I like this idea Kirk, reminds me of how the host in Green Bay makes decks. Provided you have the cards, these are what I would change (three or more changes are in spoilers):

For Judges I'd switch Crown of Thorns for Stalks of Flax

For OT Prophets I'd switch Repentance with Hab stands Watch and Joel with Benaiah

For NT Prophets I'd switch Sowing the Seed with Repentance

For Disciples I'd switch Sent 2 by 2 with Resurrection (Di)

For Kings
Spoiler (hover to show)

For Red
Spoiler (hover to show)

For Silver I'd switch Cov with Eden with I am Justice

For Teal
Spoiler (hover to show)

For TGT
Spoiler (hover to show)

For Caananites I'd switch Net with Pushed Back

For Philistines I'd switch Overwhelmed with Foolish Advice

For Israelite Kings I'd switch Chemosh with Wickedness of the Tenants

For Brown misc
Spoiler (hover to show)

For Babylonians I'd switch Axe with Dream

For Egyptians I'd switch Egyptian Spear with Temptation and Egyptian Horsemen with Egyptian Archer

For Herods
Spoiler (hover to show)

For Emperors I'd switch Deluge of Rain with Lurking and Rain becomes Dust with Golgotha

For Orange
Spoiler (hover to show)

As for how balanced they are, playtesting is the best (and most grueling :P) way to find out. Hope this helps you :)

Thanks for all your help Josh. I love your suggestions!

For KingsI'd switch Mephibosheth with King Jotham; Coat of Mail with Pentecost; and Ram's Horn with Blue Tassels

With Cov w/ Palestine do you think it is necessary to use two ways around capture? FYI - I dropped AoCp for Five Smooth Stones as I thought the kings would never get init to play it and I wanted to make it themed with all OT battle winners compared with the Disciples having all NT battle winners. Also I thought the Kings had such a large glut of battle winners maybe they would be too strong hence why I dropped one.  FYI I realize I have no King Solomon so I will use Mephibosheth for him at least for now.

Quote
For Teal I'd switch Scapegoat with Jordan Interrupted; and Burning Incense with Pentecost

I only have 2 copies of Pentecost (going in both purple decks). Should I use First Fruits instead? My other thought is to leave in Scapegoat in place of Pentecost as the priests have high numbers and don't have protection from discard.

Quote
For Babylonians I'd switch Axe with Dream

I'm wondering if I should put in Drawn Sword - that was my next enhancement to go in. What do you think of that over Dream?

Quote
For Egyptians I'd switch Egyptian Spear with Temptation

Rizpah's Sackcloth - that would keep the enhancement from being a dead card against TGT. Or are you thinking it is more advantageous to try to keep Pot's Wife/E Magicians alive after the block?

Quote
For Herods Evil Spawn with King of Tyrus.

I don't currently own a KoT (wa) - other characters over Evil Spawn? I wanted a non-royalty character to dodge King David.

Quote
For Emperors I'd switch Deluge of Rain with Lurking

I got the suggestion to put Twice Afflicted in for Deluge. Compared with Lurking?

Quote
For Orange Madness with Golgotha

Wow - I don't know how I never realized Golgotha stopped Three Nails...  :o

Altar of Incense was the one I meant for Kings, not Tassels. My bad.

First Fruits would be good if you don't have Pentecost for Teal. Covenant with Phineas is always an option to protect the Priests from discard, but you'd have to drop something for it.

Drawn Sword is good if you have an Ezekiel base, but since this is a generic Babylonian defense, I'd say a interrupt draw 3 play next is better, combined with Bels Banquet or any of your capture cards. It always goes in my Babylonian defenses. :)

I was thinking Temptation would be very good for Potiphar's Wife. Lies is another good card that would not be dead most of the time, if you want to consider that instead.

The Amalekite Slave would be better than Evil Spawn and can block King David.

I would take Lurking in an Emperor defense because its an ItB battle-extender. You'd potentially get more cards (Vitelles), immunity (Nero), discard a card from hand (Augustus, Galba), or any of your other awesome guys. Since you have Rome, you'll want the battle to be by the numbers (for the most part).

Good luck to you sir.

EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention is for the Samaritan offense, I would use The Master's Table over House at Bethany as anti-demon/anti-burial tech.EDIT

You make a lot of great points, Josh.

I think I will use Covenant with Phinehas - I had forgotten how many of the Z Temple priests were from the house of Eleazar. Dropped Silver Trumpets.

I may play with substituting Lies at some point - good idea.

I am a little torn on what to do with the Romans - Otho needs a NT evil enhancements and I only have if I use Lurking. And with one being an ITB winner and another Heavy Taxes, that leaves probably RDJ to be discarded. But then again, in the meta, I suppose Otho will draw their ITB anyways, giving me back Expelling the Jews to play as a counter...

I have never used The Master's Table! Part of me wants to put both but I think Water Jar and Gifts need to stay.

A few other ideas:

Blue - Genesis
Eve (unnecessary) out for Judah (getting back Joe or Ben from capture and discard rocks)
Jacob Buries Foreign Gods (unneeded extra battle winner) out for Creation of the World (speed/banding) or Promised Land (site access) or Captured Ark (always nice for Gen decks)

Purple - Disciples
The Ends of the Earth (never needed due to Fishing Boat) out for 4 Drachma Coin (speed)
Resurrection (not needed due to Chariot of Fire) out for Peter (another disciple)
Passover Hymn (unneeded negate) out for Andrew (another disciple)

Purple - Kings
Altar of Incense (why help your opponent) out for Covenant of Noah (love that card)
5 Smooth Stones (negate only) out for Glittering Sword (another OT battle winner)

Red - OT Warriors
Heldai (extra banding) out for Uriah (CBN goodness)
Abashai (extra banding) out for Amasai (deck destroying)
Stronghold (too complicated, and risky to wipe out LSs) out for Seeker of the Lost (LS gen)
Ram's Horn (lame) out for Covenant of Noah (love that card)
Freedom (remove) out for Jael's Nail (CBN on Uriah)
Warrior's Spear (random) out for Trumpet and Sword (CBN on Uriah)
MAYBE Dragon Raid (unneeded due to 2 Centurions) out for Captured Ark (always good with Red)

Silver - Angels
Angel at Shur (lame) out for Angel in the Path (site access, name on name with Angel's Sword)
Angel Under the Oak (doesn't fit here) out for Guardian Angel - Di (site access)
Dragon Raid (no longer needed due to above) out for Covenant of Noah (love that card)
I am Justice (lame) out for Captured Ark (much more useful)
Three Nails (lame) out for Gabriel Meets Zecharias -or- Birth Foretold (banding/searching SoG)
Gathering of Angels (takes too long) out for Michael's Sword (stop immunity + name on name)
The Second Seal (too tricky and risky) out for Army of the Lord (banding FTW)

Teal - Z-Temple
Urim & Thummin (hand looking) out for Lampstand (stopping Burial, Falling Away, and DoN)
Cov with Phineas (don't need due to Chariot of Fire) out for Priestly Crown (need 2 access arts)
Abiathar out for Haggai (getting Z-temple out fast is critical + banding)
Jordan Interrupted (interrupt requiring another card) out for Scapegoat (complete negate)
First Fruits (draw) out for Pentecost (better draw)
Feast of Trumpets (draw) out for Grain Offering (infinitely reusable protection on Joiada)

PassoverHymn is great against RBD which is huge counter to Disciples setting up.
Also kills Cov w/ Death in battle which hurts disciples...

Some ideas on the defenses:

Black - Philistines
This would be the chance to have a site lockout defense for them to try out.  If none of the defenses have a bunch of sites, then the site access cards in all the offenses will feel useless.
Temple of Dagon, Altar of Dagon, Go Into Captivity, and Scribe out for Babylonian Banquet Hall site and 3 Babylon sites.
Devourer (extra negate) out for Danite's Attack (removing site access)
Hunger (lame) out for Mask of Self Glorification (remove artifact access)
Simon the Magician (doesn't fit) out for Lying Unto God (remove artifact access)

Brown - Misc.
Abner (lame) out for King Rehoboam - Di

Crimson - Babylonian
Since Philly's are representing sites, this deck doesn't need them (and 2 isn't effective anyway)
Babylon site and BBH site both out for Go Into Captivity and Magic Charms
King Merodach-baladan (lame) out for Babylonian Forces (get out Headquarters, negate red)
Babylonian Soldiers (lame) out for Chaldeans (backup magician for MC)
Carried into Exile (too much capture) out for Drawn Sword (CBP discard)

Gold - Egyptian
Pharaoh's Throne Room (too limited protection) out for Magic Charms (double capture)
Pharaoh's Prison (lame) out for Unknown Nation (love that card)
Egyptian Horsemen (lame) out for Pharaoh's Magicians (backup for Magic Charms)
Beseiging the City (lame) out for Swift Horses (speed)
Temptation (lame) out for The Amalekite's Slave (LS gen, get who you need to block)

Gold - Herod's
I think you meant Herod's Dungeon for the site

Grey - Syrians
Here's the chance to let them try out Raider's Camp with a capture heavy defense
Damascus (lame) out for Raider's Camp (fun)
Go Into Captivity (doesn't work with RC) out for Rain Becomes Dust (slow opponents)
Baalam's Disobedience (already in Pharisees deck) out for Syrian Victory (double RC capture)
King Ben-Hadad I (lame) out for Sabbath Breaker (speed)
Deluge of Rain (why kill yourself) out for Deadly Snare (another RC capture)
False Peace (who needs to search) out for Demonic Snare (another RC capture)

Orange - Demons
Household Idols (too techy) out for Madness (keep the battle going)
Golgotha (too techy) out for Holy of Holies (infiniblock)
Evil Spawn (lame) out for Trembling Demon (infiniblock)
Demon Behind the Altar (lame) out for Seven Wicked Spirits (awesome card)
Evil Armor (lame) out for Lying Unto God (art destroying)

To Prof Underwood,

Urim and Thummim is probably the best card in the game going for priests atm except maybe for zeal. Every turnI can firgure out exactly how to approach my rescue attempt and how to counter EVERYTHING he has.

I would still try and find a spot of LotS.
