Gates of Hell is by far the best card in the game.  No questions asked.

Experienced Game:
1. Redoubter
2. Prof U
3. Isildur
4. Thomas Hunter
5. wmd1999
6. redemptioncousin
7. slugfencer

Beginner Game:
1. iamalittleking
2. Drrek
3. RDT
4. Wyatt Marcum
5. sk
6. pilgrim14
7.
At this point it seems like it would be best for Redoubter to create a new thread specifically for the Experienced Game.  In that new thread we can figure out how to assign countries.  We could just use random.org.  Or another way I've seen is to have everyone submit their 3 top preferences (or state that they don't have any preference).  Then it is usually possible to give everyone a country that they like.

We can let this thread continue for the Beginners to either have 1 more person join, or to decide that they want to go ahead and start with 6 players.  Although I'm not sure about Wyatt, since his internet access will be limited for the next few weeks (until school starts).

New thread set up.  Experienced players, roll out!

For the Beginner game, we can wait until Wyatt is ready for sure, go ahead now, or wait for a 7th.  I say do the first, while hoping a 7th joins.

Hi guys,
I just wanted to let you know that my friend Stephen Coates is interested in joining this Beginner game of Diplomacy.  He is also in our Redemption playgroup here at Oakdale, although he didn't get the chance to come to Nats with us this summer.  He's just heard of Diplomacy for the first time this week, but I think he'll pick up on it quickly, and you guys will have fun playing with him.

I also talked to Wyatt, and he is still hoping to do this although his internet access may be limited to 2-3 times per week.  Still enough to get his orders in, but his communication may be a bit sporadic.

Anyway, that gives you guys a full slate of people.  So I think you're ready to go.  Someone will need to go set up a game here. and kinda be the person in charge of this game.  Any volunteers?

Yeah, that's a good idea.  If I were running this game, I would have everyone post here to list their top 3 country choices (or state that they really don't care which country they get).  That way we see if everyone is still interested in playing in this game, and if it works out like normal, then everyone can end up with one of their top choices (assuming that a couple people don't really care at all which country they get).

I just talked to Stephen Coates, and he has a slight preference for England, but is really OK with any country.

Bad news is that I talked to Wyatt today and he said he's gonna have to drop out.

Good news is that opens a spot for 1 more player who wants to join :)

I assume that you guys still are looking for 1 more player and for one of you to take the lead in getting things started.  The experienced game has been going for a little while, and has been really fun so far.

I suppose another possibility is that whoever is eliminated first in the experienced game could join the beginner game and be the leader who gets things started.  It might help to have one experienced player to kinda help answer questions for anyone who is confused at the start.

I think that's a good idea--just stick the xp player w/a tougher country like ger/aus

Good idea.  We'll give the experienced player (whoever that ends up being) Austria (which is probably the hardest country to be).  Meanwhile, what are the country preferences of the other 6 of you guys?  Please list your top 3 choices or just say that you don't care if that is the case.

In order to get ahead and win the game, you will have to lie to and betray someone at some point.
I'm glad to report that the experienced game just finished and to my recollection, none of the surviving 3 players lied to anyone throughout the game.  The "End Game Report" can be found here.

As for going forward, I know that some of the players from the experienced game are ready for a break for a while, but perhaps at least one of them would be interested in taking charge to set up a new game and be the 7th player for the beginner game that never started to my knowledge.  Any takers?
