I didn't realize that telling half truths is not lying.
According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary:
Quote
Definition of LIE
intransitive verb
1: to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive
2: to create a false or misleading impression
I typically just think of lying as the first definition.  However, like Redoubter said, if you also consider the 2nd definition to by lying, that also makes sense and you should follow your conscience in that matter.

The way this plays out in Diplomacy is something like this:
Pretend that I know that the player controlling England is about to send a fleet to the English Channel to attack France.  However the English player has lied and told the French player that he is NOT going to the English Channel.  In my communications with France, I will NOT personally tell them that they are safe from English attack.  However if it is in my best interest in the game for England to get the upper hand, then I also will not volunteer the information that England plans to attack them.

I would concur, since the experienced game would be missing just Italy (not a big loss ;)) and fewer players may mean an easier time learning the game for the other game.  Prof U, what do you think?

Experienced Game:
1. Redoubter
2. Prof U
3. Isildur
4. Thomas Hunter
5. wmd1999
6. redemptioncousin
7.

Beginner Game:
1. iamalittleking
2. Drrek
3. RDT
4. Kyp Henderson
5.
6.
7.
Considering that we're only 1 player short on the experienced game I would suggest that we just recruit one more person to play.  I think I have a friend who would be interested if no one else from the boards here volunteers.

As for the beginner game, I think it would be alright for them to start with less people since it will be more of a learning game.  However even then I think 5 or 6 would be more fun than 4.  Perhaps I can find a couple more people who would like to join them.  Or perhaps someone else knows someone off-board that would be interested in checking out a new game (important that they are willing to commit to seeing it through for the next 6 months).

I'd be interested in joining the beginner game. Am I correct that I wouldn't need an actual board to keep track of the game?

Not yet.  Your game still needs 1 more player.

I'd be interested in joining the beginner game. Am I correct that I wouldn't need an actual board to keep track of the game?
You are correct.  You can easily find copies of the board online and print one out if you like a hard copy.  But the actual game will be run here.

Current Players:
Experienced Game:
1. Redoubter
2. Prof U

5. wmd1999
6. redemptioncousin

Beginner Game:

Why don't we just start both games and leave out Italy?  From what I understand, no one likes Italy anyway.

How rude.

In any case, Prof U, I appreciate you keeping an eye on this.  For some reason I have been very distracted and busy of late, not sure why  ::)

Actually Italy won the last game of Diplomacy that I played.  The game really is best with 7 players.

Glad to help out.

I agree its best with 7 players, but we've been waiting for over a month to start a game.  I thinks its probably best to just start at this point.

We'll be playing for 6 months, so waiting one month to get started doesn't seem like a big deal to me.  I have a friend who has played before (we were enemies the whole game last time), and I'm hoping he'll join and be our 7th player.  I also know that slugfencer has talked about wanting to play for a long time, but has had crazy stuff in his schedule for the last month or so.  I'm also hoping that if we wait long enough, that his schedule will normalize and he'll be able to join us.

If the players in the Beginner game want to go ahead and start without Italy, I'm fine with that (since I'm not in that game, and since they're all just learning the game together anyway).

If all the other players in the experienced game want to start without the full number of players, they can too.  Diplomacy is always a democracy, and I'm not running this show, only helping out Redoubter.  But I'm personally not interested in a less than full game, so you'd probably be missing 2 countries.

Nope, I was talking about someone else.  Do you think Kayleb would like to play?

I'm sorry, this is moving a little too slow for my tastes, and I don't think I would be able to play this slowly. I have played several other games by email that do take months to play (Britannia) and I just don't feel like this would be one I would be able to commit my time to and keep track of in addition to these other games. I will have to drop out, hope it works out for everyone else!

I understand your frustration.  I really thought that I would've heard back from at least one of the several people I contacted about this game.

It occurs to me that perhaps some of the other people who initially expressed interest might also have re-evaluated their level of commitment to play.  Perhaps the best thing to do would be to have people re-confirm their interest to play, and to just go ahead and start the first game with the experienced players + 1 of the rookies (or more if some experienced players drop out).  Then if the game is a success, then there could be more interest in the future for others to join another game.

What does everyone think about this plan?  Also, could everyone at least chime in on whether they are still interested in playing?

I appreciate your willingness Wyatt, and I think you probably could handle it.  But I think we'd have to go in order of how people signed up, so there would be several people ahead of you.
