Looking for Dominion Cards
« on: January 18, 2014, 10:52:36 PM »

Is anyone trading or selling Dominion Cards? I have the Base Set, but I want to expand to 5-6 players. I know I can just buy an expansion, but there are so many to choose from, and I know that a lot of you play the game. I figured I would see what I could get here first before scouring the internet for the cheapest prices on the expansions.

I have every Redemption card except the Women's Error cards. I can pay for them through PayPal, or check if you prefer. I need quotes that include all shipping costs, please.

Post here or PM me any offers.

---------------

**EDIT**

I read the "Intrigue" rules online that mention 5-6 player games. It looks like the main thing I need are:

6x Province
6x Estate
20x Curse

I also could use up to 30 more each of Copper, Silver and Gold.

I'm sure that new Action cards would be fun, too, plus whatever new surprises came in the expansions.  ;D

Couldn't you just make your own cards for those by putting "ESTATE" on a piece of paper glued to a Redemption card?  Since Dominion has all the cards on the table face up, and all the cards in your hand are only targeted by your own choices, I don't think it would matter much if card backs were different.

I thought I had a deck, and had to shuffle and draw from it. Am I playing the game wrong?

There are sets that you can use to expand to 5-6 players if you dont want to commit to an expansion (http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Grande-Games-RGG-471/dp/B007MKLX84/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1390146759&sr=8-9&keywords=dominion for example).

But you could make your own, hypothetically. Prof is talking about the piles that you buy from, since they're all face up. Yeah, you could possibly have the issue of the backs when you've put them in your own deck, and that would be concerning, but otherwise I think it'd be okay for now.

I can get that set at Wal-Mart for $12. I just wanted to see if I could trade first. But, if nobody is trading theirs, then I will just buy that set.

You are both right that after you buy the cards, they go in your deck that is shuffled and face down.  But even then I don't think it'll matter much if the backs are different.  It seems pretty rare that even knowing what your top card is would make a big difference in how you would play your hand (and especially if you only knew that your top card was an VP).  I know there are occasions, but they just seem rare.

They aren't as rare with the expansions, in my opinion. Knowing my top card has made all of the difference with some (the card I have in mind is one that actually lets you try to guess the top card of your deck. If you're right, you get to draw it).

the only cards that I would consider buying that are not part of a expansion set are the promos. I believe there was a pirate chest card that let you get access to 10 cards that you didn't add to the normal game to shake things up (ie sets of cards that others don't have access to), I don't know what other promos have been released, that was a LONG time ago...

Promos that I know of (this off the top of my head...aka I didn't look it up)
Black Market:  Look at top 3 cards of blue backed deck. You may buy one of these cards.
Stash:  Worth 2.  When you shuffle your discard pile, you put stash anywhere in your deck.  (The cards have different card backs)
Walled Village:  Draw 1 and 2 actions.  If you haven't played more than 2 actions, then you may place this card on top of your deck.
Blank cards:  (similar to what comes in every set)
Governor:  Do 1 of 3 things (I forget the exact wording of the 3), then do 1 of 3 things (I forgot these 3 as well)

All used to be able to be found on Ebay.

If you have different card backs you should sleeve the cards with non-clear sleeves. Way too many cards and scenarios where knowing if a certain card may come up with dramatically impact your play. Also regular wear and tear on coppers and estates (along with other point cards and coins) makes them stand out significantly in a deck vs your kingdom cards which dont see play every game. I sleeve all my dominion cards with penny sleeves to avoid this. I recommend that for everyone as well.

You can get Black Market, Governor, and another promo from Board Game Geek, I just bought them for my friends a couple weeks ago.

They also sell a product called "Base Cards", which is a set of basic treasure, victory, and curse cards with updated graphics. You can use that in addition to the original game's set for 5-6 player games, or on its own for nicer-looking cards.

http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Grande-Games-RGG-471/dp/B007MKLX84

(I personally would just get Intrigue, it's a lot more bang for your buck unless you really like to have nicer art on your basic cards. Doubling the number of kingdom cards, with generally more interesting cards and combinations, is huge for the game's extended replayability.)

In my limited experience with 5+ player games, it's not nearly as good as playing with 4 or less, especially as the cards were balanced with 2-4 players in mind (cards like Jester and Pirate Ship get ridiculous, and you have a lot of waiting between turns. But that's just my opinion.

That is what Marti was talking about, and what I said Wal-Mart had for $12, but thanks for the input.  ;D

This is really what I was wondering the most, and appears to be my best choice. Even though Prosperity and Seaside have more interesting Action cards (or new types of cards?), Intrigue appears to be the only one with the additional base cards needed for multiplayer. The real question is whether it is worth up to $20 more than the Base Cards Set. I will keep looking on eBay for ones that end cheaper (as always, for me), but it will still likely be $15 more.

I appreciate your opinion, and that may be an issue we'll have to decide upon as a group. For now, we are just so used to playing games with a minimum of 6 players, and as many as 9. Cutting that down to just 4 will be tough.

Intrigue really is a lot of fun, especially if your family really enjoys it and if you think you'll eventually want to expand anyway. :) The addition of Victory/Treasure and Victory/Action cards makes it fun too.

Not to derail, but some of my favorite games that can fit 6 people, not counting party games:

Power Grid
Sticheln
The Resistance
Shadow Hunters
Incan Gold
Drakon
Malta!
Battlestar Galactica

Strategy games are tough with 6 or more players; at that point a few problems crop up: you're doing stuff a smaller amount of the time (high downtime), your actions are less likely to be effective, and your choices are less likely to be interesting. 5- and 6-player Dominion, to me, has the first two problems.

Is there a strong reason you don't break up into 2 or more games when you have that many players?

If you could re-post this under the thread Game Review Ideas, that would be appreciated.  ;D

The Resistance

Do you recommend the regular one, or Avalon? What is the difference (if you know)?

Malta!

I've heard some strange things about the creator of this game..... or was it that his last name was hard to spell....   ;)

Is there a strong reason you don't break up into 2 or more games when you have that many players?

Not really. Our playgroup is a mix of ages from 10-50 years old, so we are not overly competitive. We have found that larger groups are more fun, even though we do have issues with downtime. Imagine playing an 8-player Settlers of Catan with Cities&Knights, Rivers, and Fish.  :o

Avalon is the exact same game as The Resistance with some enhancements. Specifically, they introduce "role" characters that have special powers for both sides of the game to help add layers of strategy. If you purchase one, I would recommend Avalon to try out the roles. Worst case scenario, you can always play Avalon without the roles - in which case it's exactly the same as the Resistance.

Since nobody wants to loosen their grip on their Dominion cards, it looks like Intrigue is my best bet. Thanks for all the input!  :grouphug:

I often find 2 games of Dominion with 3 players each preferable to 1 game with 6 players. The game dynamic is definitely much different for 6 players.

Is Intrigue a stand-alone? I would need two stand-alones to have two separate games.

Yup! It has extra coinage, victory cards, and curses included.
