Title: Good Board/Card games?
Post by: Red Wing on December 10, 2011, 02:54:01 PM
Anybody know of good board/card games they would recommend? Other than main-stream ones like Monoploy or Risk? I'm thinking of asking for a game for Christmas.

Settlers of Catan, or better yet, Settlers of Canaan.  ;D

Then again, if you want to go collectible there's always Dragon Dice...

Anyone mind explaining Ticket to Ride to me? I've never played it.

I have Settlers Catan, and it's pretty good game, just kinda long. I haven't played Settlers of Canaan in forever, how does that compare with Catan?

In ticket to ride you build train tracks of varying degree to get points. You can also complete routes to get points. My favorite game is definitely either Arkham Horror or Dominion.

Dominion.

Dominion or Puerto Rico. Settlers really isn't good without the expansions. Dominion just gets so much better with the expansions...

Candyland

That reminds me of when I was a kid and played that Whit's End game from Focus on the Family. Anyone else ever play that?

If you have Settlers of Catan, then ask for the expansions. The game changes so much that you will likely never play the original version again. Cities & Knights is my preferred expansion, but Seafarers is good, too. Traders & Barbarians had a few good additions (like the rivers), but some of the other optional "scenarios" were not so great.

I've got to go with Bang! and Munchkin. Played Munchkin today at the MN local tournament and had tons of fun with that, and Bang! has always been one of my favorites.

I probably shouldn't admit this here, but my family's favorite "fun" board game is the Red Dragon Inn series.

Anybody know of good board/card games they would recommend?
This totally depends on what kind of gamer you are.

Serious gamer with a really long attention span - Fortress America or LotR RISK (trilogy ed.)

Abstract gamer - Twixt or Blokus

Casual gamer hoping to play with girls sometimes - Ticket to Ride or Settlers of Catan

Someone who values cooperation over competition - Shadows Over Camelot or Scotland Yard

Someone who just wants to play with cool pieces - Heroscape or Star Wars: Epic Duels

Someone who wants to lose all their friends - Diplomacy

Addition:
Someone who likes to roll a LOT of dice: Dragon Dice or Dicecapades

(Still hoping that by next summer there will actually be a Dragon Dice stand-alone board game.)

Alien Frontiers is a game I've been playing quite a lot lately.  It's fairly simple to learn to play but still gives you interesting decisions to make on your turn.

Plus, there are additional materials coming out in the spring that will make this game super-cool.

Never play it with "friends" who value winning over any type of friendship.  It sounds like a fun game for certain people, but not for me.

In the first of Prof. U's categories also goes Axis and Allies. Lots of different versions, all with slight differences. All in all, a really awesome series - if you can get anyone to play them with you  :P (I have the same problems with the other games in this group)

Is Stratego considered mainstream? If not, it's awesome.

Resident Evil is actully alot of fun (DBG).

It actually is not.  The mansion deck mechanic destroys the flow of the game.  The theme is basically the one reason that I like it more than Guardians of Graxia, and the reason my brother-in-law would rather play it than Ascension.

Truth be told, a lot of the first-generation knock-offs of Dominion are mediocre at best: Thunderstone is the only one I play with any regularity, and only by playing a variant I devised that scales the setup for different numbers of players.  The more recent DBGs are more creative and varied: Core Worlds uses action points and progressive growth in card strength.  Eminent Domain may be the most fun DBG I've played in the last two years.  LotR actually made a cooperative DBG.  Quarriors substitutes the cards with dice, and Puzzle Strike substitutes the cards with chips.  These games actually PLAY differently than Dominion (unlike Thunderstone or RE), and don't introduce so much chaos as to reduce the gameplay to turn-by-turn tactics (Ascension).

One good thing about RE, though, is that they have different rule sets that simulate the different game modes, Mercenaries, etc.  So I guess there's that.

Idk if I'd call it a game even, though it is VERY fun.

It's fairly family friendly, but there have been a few questionable cards. One makes you dangle a pencil over somebody's head and pretend it's mistletoe. I was playing with my cousins...

What did you do? Did you put that card back, or obey the card?

I threw the card away. Not actually, just am keeping it separate from the cards I play with. There was one female who wasn't my cousin, and I really wouldn't have minded...but it really wouldn't have been appropriate. If anything, I would have just taken a penalty. I didn't win anyway...
