In the last example, he gained nothing from taking coal over oil, and I had no chance of winning the game. There was no impact on the final outcome of the game, other than to completely take out of the picture a player who wasn't going to win anyway. He did it just to punk me. Contrast with Leslie who was coming after me because we were playing an elimination game, and her winning would require me to be eliminated one way or the other.
You can feel badly if you need to do something to benefit yourself/win the game, but if you have two options and neither will benefit you more but one will screw me, you don't feel badly about that. You targeted me with that move. It's like if I burned you in BSG as a toaster, and in the next game, you throw me in the brig immediately in retaliation, no matter what my true loyalty is in the new game. That's fine, I get that, and I'm fairly thick-skinned when it comes to gaming. Just own it.
