This game is really fun. I just started playing it a week ago with some guys at my church and it is really good. It random but yet still requires strategy.  Its also pretty basic, but really addicting and fun.
I never want to grow up, hmmm maybe thats why I'm a youth pastor.

I like Ark of the Covenant because it is sort of a standalone version of Carc plus the first one or two expansions, and easier field scoring.  But to really expand it, yeah, you need to get the base game and several of the expansions.

It's definitely a classic. I own the version Carcassonne: The City, which has a lot of similarities to the original, but has some differences that make me love it even more. One change is that you can't place a meeple (roughly person-shaped piece) on a feature you're just completing. Another change is that the only feature you have to match between tiles are roads - markets and fields can border and close off each other at will. There are some other minor scoring changes, but the largest difference is the addition of city walls, which are placed around the existing city every time any feature is scored once you get a certain way into the game. These close off progress on bordering tiles/features, and allow you to place guards, which stay through the end of the game (like farmers) and score points for buildings they can "see" (are in the same row/column as the guard).

The City is my favorite Carcassonne version, and I know I'm not alone in that.
