In the last example, he gained nothing from taking coal over oil, and I had no chance of winning the game.  There was no impact on the final outcome of the game, other than to completely take out of the picture a player who wasn't going to win anyway.  He did it just to punk me.  Contrast with Leslie who was coming after me because we were playing an elimination game, and her winning would require me to be eliminated one way or the other.

You can feel badly if you need to do something to benefit yourself/win the game, but if you have two options and neither will benefit you more but one will screw me, you don't feel badly about that.  You targeted me with that move.  It's like if I burned you in BSG as a toaster, and in the next game, you throw me in the brig immediately in retaliation, no matter what my true loyalty is in the new game.  That's fine, I get that, and I'm fairly thick-skinned when it comes to gaming.  Just own it.

Oh, I misunderstood your situation (not knowing the game).  I am completely against shafting someone in a game to no strategic advantage.  That is just poor sportsmanship in my book.  And I agree that is not something that someone would feel badly about.

I honestly don't see an issue with cutthroat gaming at all, You are playing to win, even in a fun game you want to win! Maybe it is because I am very ruthless even when having fun (Anyone who was at nats last year and played with me outside of redemption knows this well, 'speicaly in family business.). I just don't see the issue with intentionally gunning someone down, back stabbing or anything of the like. Then again I come from the family who played Risk and Monopoly alot ;)

I like this kind of gaming, too. Especially since I, like Professor Underwood, was frequently playing against myself. However, this did not work well for my self-esteem.

And I thought I was the only boy who played monopoly and risk by myself...  :o
